Your year end, covered
For limited companies: three connected pieces of work, handled together.
If you trade as a sole trader, see Self Assessment and tax returns. Starting a company? See company formation and Corporation Tax registration.
The right filing, in the right place.
- Your year-end accounts
- We prepare statutory accounts from your records. They include a balance sheet, a profit and loss account and notes. A director’s report is included unless the company is a micro-entity.
- Your Company Tax Return (CT600)
- We prepare your Company Tax Return, which is how the tax is worked out, and file it with HMRC as your agent. You must file it even if the company made a loss.
- Companies House filing
- We file your annual accounts. Give us your Companies House authentication code and we can send them for you.

Questions about company accounts
Answers drawn from gov.uk, with a source beside each one.
Do I file a Company Tax Return if the company made a loss?
Yes. gov.uk says you must file the return even if the company makes a loss or has no Corporation Tax to pay.
Will HMRC send me a Corporation Tax bill?
No. gov.uk says you do not get a bill. You have to work out the tax through your Company Tax Return, pay it, or report that you have nothing to pay, by the deadline.
Who has to receive a copy of the accounts?
gov.uk says you must always send copies of the statutory accounts to all shareholders, to people who can go to the company’s general meetings, to Companies House, and to HMRC as part of your Company Tax Return.
Can I send simpler accounts to Companies House?
Small companies and micro-entities may be able to send abridged accounts to Companies House, but still send full statutory accounts to members and to HMRC. gov.uk sets the size tests. We check which apply to your company.
Can you file at Companies House for me?
Yes. gov.uk says you can give your Companies House authentication code to an accountant so they can file your accounts, and appoint an agent to file your Company Tax Return.
